If you watch sports then you’ve probably noticed more talk about concussions. Although they’re called concussions, in the medical community they’re officially known as “mild traumatic brain injuries.” They result from a direct blow to the head, face, neck, or other part of the body that transmits an impulsive force to the head. The signs and symptoms of a concussion can be subtle and very often go unnoticed. You’ll typically see varying degrees of altered cognition that resolves gradually, although there doesn’t necessarily need to be a loss of consciousness, which is most often what happens in sports. Another important factor is that on an imaging study, like a CT scan, the brain appears normal. This means that the effects of a concussion are functional problems and not structural.
